Why Keep Chickens in Australia?

Chickens are a great asset. They’re companionable, they’re entertaining, they’re pretty easy to look after, and they lay delicious eggs – what more could you ask for? If you’re not convinced, read on.

What a great treat each morning!

  1. They provide delicious breakfasts
Chickens, as we all know, lay eggs. But what a lot of people don’t know is how much better eggs from your own chickens taste! Rearing your own chooks means that you know exactly where your food comes from, as you’ll know exactly where your hens are kept and exactly what they’re fed on.

  2. They make great pets
Although they can at times be a little bird-brained, people all over the world have come to realise that these feathery individuals can in fact make great pets. Once your chooks get to know and like you, they’ll come up to sit in your lap, take food from your hand, and generally strut around and be nosy. They’re great companions for adults (especially keen gardeners) and for children. Chickens are a win-win way to give kids wonderful pets: your children get great animal companions they’ve always wanted (as do you), and the whole family gets delicious eggs.

  3. They can help with the gardening
Keeping hens in your backyard is really beneficial for the garden. Not only do these animals spend hours scouring every blade of grass for pests, but their droppings can help make incredibly good fertiliser for some of your plants.

  4. They can eat your scraps
Chickens are fantastic food recyclers, as they can eat a number of different scraps from kitchens. Have a look at the feeding section of this guide for more information. Remember, if you’re in doubt about whether they can eat it, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

  5. They’re entertaining Chickens are very characterful creatures, and as you get to know them, you’ll understand more and more about their individual personalities. With care and attentions, they’ll become members of the family.
